Whether you’re in the practice of doing routine check-ins with yourself or if you’re looking to start, journaling prompts for self discovery are a great place to start!
I personally like to use these journal topics for self growth every couple of months and especially around the new year. But they were initially recommended to me when I watched an Instagram video about finding your passion and purpose.
Ever since then, I recommend journaling to everyone who is in need of a little self-introspection. Try these journal prompts and let me know if they work for you too!

First, let’s set the mood for an ideal journaling session. You’ll want to make yourself comfy and if you’re like me, you’ll want to grab your favorite pen and journal.
However, any writing utensil and paper will do. Heck, even a computer or phone notes if you’re on the go, just whatever you want to use to record your thoughts.

1. If you keep living life this way, would you become the person you want to be?
This is the perfect question to analyze your habits and how you’ve been living daily.
Sometimes we don’t pay attention to the weekdays and highly anticipated the weekend… BUT we should be making sure that we are living EVERY day with intention!
There’s no judgment in answering this question honestly, it’s about acknowledging where you are at this moment.
2. What are your daily habits and priorities?
After writing about the previous prompt, this one is for contemplating our conscious and subconscious habits. There are definitely some habits we choose to prioritize throughout our day but we rarely realize our subconscious patterns.
3. What are you passionate about?
Answer truthfully and honestly. There’s no pressure to be passionate about something when you journal, this is a good place to brainstorm all the things that make you light up.
Think: activities, places, dreams, causes, etc.
4. If you weren’t afraid, what would you do?
What are some opportunities and experiences you’ve turned down because you were afraid? Or worried you weren’t qualified for? Or that others would judge you for participating (even though you really wanted to)?
If you weren’t afraid/worried about being judged, would you still choose not to go for it?
5. What is the most important lesson you learned the hard way?
Some important lessons are learned the hard way and we don’t like to think about them because it brings up those icky feelings.
As difficult as it can be, there’s usually so much to discover about ourselves from these lessons and moments.
If you are able to explore them safely, try to dig in more on that lesson.
6. When do you feel like your favorite self? How often do you feel that way?
So often we feel pressure to be our “best selves”, but use this journal prompt as an opportunity to discover what your favorite self looks like. What does your favorite self act like? How often are you living like your favorite self lives?
7. Are you surrounded by people who support you?
One difficult truth to face is when you’re surrounding yourself with people that aren’t supporting you or giving you the encouragement you need.
It can be easy to fall back on old relationships because they are familiar but that doesn’t necessarily mean that they’re the best for you NOW.
