Accountability in the workplace is just as important even when you’re your own boss, it can determine how successful you can be!

Whether you’re employed by someone else or trying to be your own boss, the importance of accountability in the workplace cannot be understated. Honestly, it’s one of the most important ingredients for success.
But if you want to be an entrepreneur, honesty and accountability are a must – even when you’re “reporting” to yourself!
If you’ve ever wondered how to be more accountable and the benefits of accountability in the workplace as you start your own vision, then let’s dive in.
This post is all about accountability in the workplace.
Accountability In The Workplace
You probably know all about working for a “normal” job with a “normal” boss – that life of deadlines to meet and tasks to get done.
However, one of the hardest parts of pursuing your dreams and being your own boss is being accountable when the “workplace” is HOME.
If someone is breathing down your neck about getting something done, you’re more likely to make it a priority. But when you’re the only one that knows what needs to be done, it can be hard to be motivated.
That’s when you really need to pull all the stops and find how to be accountable while you’re working.
Set Your Hours
You need to have firm hours of when you’re working and when you’re not. They might change from day to day or week to week but it’s important that you know the distinction.
One of the biggest issues I noticed when I started working from home was I wanted to do chores.
If you mix home life with your work life without a schedule or intention to do so, you might fall into a trap of unproductivity.
You have to keep them separate, it’s the only way to devote your sole focus and attention.
I’ve found that I’m more productive in the morning than I am in the evening, so I’ve scheduled myself to be “working” in the mornings.
I’m not focusing on anything else to be done and I’ll wait to do those miscellaneous tasks later in the day.

Set Your Space
Along the same lines of setting your hours, you need to determine which space will be for working. Again, it doesn’t have to be the same every day but you have to have it set up for productivity.
I’m not going to stay in my pajamas, in bed if I’m trying to work on a project.
And I’m not saying you have to dress up business formal and have an entire office either, but there is a balance and you need to determine a place where you can be and entire that “hustle” mode mindset.
Protect Your Boundaries
This could look different for a lot of situations but essentially, you need to create and protect a business boundary.
If you’re having trouble focusing because you’re getting notifications on your phone all the time, then you should put on Focus mode when you work or put your phone in a different room entirely.
Get rid of the distractions you can control! Whether it’s silencing your phone or letting the people you live with know when is not a good time to chat with you.
And if you schedule “work time” and “free time”, stick to the schedule. Try not to bend the time when you’d rather be doing something more fun.
It’s the people that are willing to put in the effort when no one else is that achieves greatness. But I get it, people need fun too – just stick to the schedule!

Understand What You’re Working Towards
Don’t lose sight of why you’re putting in those extra hours or saying No more often.
Being your own boss also means disciplining yourself and setting standards for yourself. Accountability in the workplace starts with understanding that it’s YOUR working space.
If the job doesn’t get done, that’s on you. You are solely responsible for the work that does (and doesn’t) get done!
